Just in time for the hot days in August, I finished up two solar ovens.  The fun oven is in the shape of a flower and will bake a single cookie…

Sunflower Cookie Oven

Following some basic plans laid out in wikia about building a minimum solar oven, I bent a few rules and a lot of cardboard to come up with this little cooker.  I’ve seen it get to 200 F, which is a bit below the typical 350 F cookie baking temperature.

Undaunted by my first mishap, trying to bake a cupcake, I did a bit more research and tried a vegan cookie recipe.  Cookies are thinner and thus easier to cook through, and vegan has less of a chance to spoil/salmonella.  (I could be wrong, so don’t blame me for any food born pathogens if you try this at home.)

The first “batch” started with first light in the morning and was ready when I came home in the afternoon.

I used Kelly Peloza’s “Bakery Style Crispy Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies (with A Hint of Maple)” that she graciously posted on her blog. They were wonderful!

    Wow, baking with solar heat?! Incredible. But difficult, no? This is very interesting and something I would love to try!

    Turned out to be pretty easy, but you need to be patient while the food cooks.
