Shoulder Mounted Newt

Shoulder Mounted Telescope 1.0

My early scope, a 900 mm Bushnell, hadn’t seen much use lately, so I converted it into a true ‘grab and go’.  I added a diagonal and some weekend wood working to come up with this.

At 30x, I can hold an image pretty steady over the shoulder.  I can comfortably go up to about 45 degrees, and can strain a bit to go higher.

The whole rig is pretty light and can be held easily with one hand.

I’m currently using big rubber bands, and it holds the scope snug enough, but I may go with more substantial straps. Other improvements will be adding a handle (shoulder strap?) to the top and moving the red-dot finder closer to the eyepiece. Also in the plan is re-wiring the red-dot finder to a trigger switch. I’m also toying with the idea of placing a small clipboard to strap on a small set of star maps in front. (Sort of like sheet music holders for a marching band.)

That said, the optics need some work as I can’t use my eyepieces as the focus is a tad ‘short’.

What started out as sort of a tongue-in-cheek project,  now seems to have some merit.

365+ Tweets for Healthcare Orgs

Since May of 2009, I have been posting almost daily tweets on how healthcare orgs might use social  media.  @John_Norris with the tag #hcsm

I finished up the first 100 tips  in late September 2009.

I did the second 100 tips in late February of 2010.

The third set of 100 tips were completed by August.

The example I use is Twitter, but any microblogging and socially connected platform would do.  I put together some of my thoughts in a presentation, “Hyper-Local Social Media and Healthcare” or better known as “@mayoclinic has good info, why should I listen to you?

The final 65 are below, some are seasonal, some are local, so your mileage may vary!

Help students with health homework? OK, but no test answers.

Tips to make sure Santa’s Workshop is safe? Ask your ER & facilities folks about safety measures around the workbench.

A Pedestal Display For Tiny Things

Domed Display

As early readers of my blog know, I really enjoy playing with how various frames change our perceptions of objects.  Just placing something on a pedestal makes itseem special.  With this one, I wanted to have a more fantasy/faerie feel to it, so worked with rounder, softer shapes.  I drooped and bent some of the major elements as well.  Instead of the warring states  Chinese feeling some of my other pieces have, this one walks a different line. More cake decoration than bronze.

I finished it up by sewing a small, velvet pillow and glued on an acrylic dome from a gumball machine prize. I stepped outside my typical hand worked ‘elemental style’ to match my idea, and ended up liking the actual piece.  A main reason why I enjoy making things is the surprises that come as the idea becomes real.
